Two Great DIY All Purpose Cleaners

I've been making my own household cleaners for the past few months and I am VERY pleased with the results!  The two I'm going to share with you today are as good if not better than any store bought commercial cleaner.  They will also save you money (yay!) and you can rest easy that you and your family are not breathing harmful chemicals or having harmful chemicals absorb into your skin.  Double Bonus!

I started out by buying a few squirt bottles.  You can also reuse old bottles just be sure to clean them REALLY well.  The only ones I've reused so far are from the Method cleaners.

ALL PURPOSE HOUSEHOLD CLEANER #1
  • 16 oz distilled water
  • 3 Tablespoons liquid Dr. Bronner's castile soap
  • 1 teaspoon tea tree oil
  • optional 10-15 drops of essential oil
Fill a spray bottle with 16oz of water.  For cleaning purposes I like to use distilled water.  You can either buy some or boil your own.  You just don't want any minerals in the water or it can leave streaks/residue.  Add 3 Tablespoons of liquid Dr. Bronner's castile soap.  I have only used the unscented but any would be fine.  Then add 1 teaspoon of tea tree oil.  Shake to combine.  I also don't care much for the scent of tea tree oil, so I add other essential oils to mask the smell.  I've used lavender, spearmint, lemongrass, and orange.  Just use whatever tickles your fancy!

This cleaner will cut through ANYTHING.  Seriously folks, it's good.  It can be a bit sudsy if you use too much so a rinse might be required if you get carried away.  It's not great for stainless or glass/mirrors (I'll share my glass cleaner soon!) but any other surface is fine.  I really like this cleaner and I use it a lot.

ALL PURPOSE HOUSEHOLD CLEANER #2
  • 1/4 cup rubbing alcohol
  • 5-10 drops of lavender essential oil
  • 3 drops of liquid soap
Add all ingredients to a spray bottle and then add distilled water to the 25oz mark.  Unlike the previous cleaner, this one is great for stainless.  It will also shine up granite something fierce.  The alcohol smell can be strong at first but you can always add more lavender.  Personally, I don't mind the smell.  It smells clean.  And once it dries (which is quickly) the smell dissipates.  I use it a lot in my bathrooms.

So there you have it - 2 great all purpose cleaners!

Happy Cleaning!

I'm back

So....after a very lengthy blogger break, I'm back!  My focus has shifted to healthy living - eating clean and living clean.

I'm pretty limited on time these days...I constantly chase after a crazy active 10 month old and an equally active 8 year old.  My blog has been stripped down to the very basics.  I can't be obsessing over how "pretty" my blog is!  I'm going to do my best to post things here but for ease of sharing I created a Facebook page:  www.facebook.com/thesimplerlife

Come on over and "like" my page.  That will be the easiest and fastest way for me to share recipes, pictures, etc. with you!
